Albiston Addition

Albany, California

A Family Addition

A small Arts & Crafts Bungalow and a growing family needed more living space and an updated Kitchen. The family loved their Albany bungalow, but the cramped Kitchen had little original character, the fireplace had been bricked over, and the basement office was barely legal. The result of their remodel is a generous Kitchen with improved backyard access and a cozy downstairs Family Room complete with a new direct-vent fireplace.

Upstairs, the brick Living Room fireplace was also replaced with a direct-vent fireplace and hand-made arts and crafts tile. The expanded kitchen allowed the family to incorporate a computer "homework" space and better outdoor circulation. The room was designed to match original period details and features custom windows and casework, a quartz countertop and hand-waxed custom cabinets. With modern appliances and lighting, it reflects the ambience found in the original living rooms.

Downstairs, the new Family Room incorporates custom built-ins and traditional woodwork with large french doors that allow the backyard to become part of the family space.
