Holan Residence 1

Holan Kitchen, Albany, California

"Small-Space Solutions," This Old House, March, 2008

This 1930 Spanish Mission home had a tiny 9' x 10' Art Deco kitchen with a poor layout and no room to expand. Architecturally, the wall between the kitchen and dining room was replaced with an arched opening and high marble shelf. Three wood casement windows replaced two aluminum double-hung windows and with more views and more light, the kitchen feels larger even though no square footage was added.

Due to the small size of the kitchen, custom cabinets were necessary and were painted for a traditional bungalow look. Apartment-sized appliances were selected and rearranged for better functionality while custom tiles are highlighted with antique tiles on the walls. An authentic 1907 gas light fixture was converted and replated for the kitchen. In the breakfast nook, the original ironing board cabinet was transformed into a display shelf.
