Loo-San Juan Master Shower Room, Berkeley, California

The master bathroom of this ca. 1895 Colonial Revival home featured 1950's materials, fixtures, and finishes and had no shower. As part of a larger renovation of their home, the Owners decided to remodel with fixtures and tile more in keeping with the traditional style of their landmark residence. The only original elements that remained in the bathroom were its window, door, casework, and ceiling rosette – all elements that were preserved. The plumbing fixtures were removed and the layout reconfigured to take advantage of the room’s sole window. A frameless master shower replaced the showerless tub and white 3" x 6" “subway” tile was highlighted with glass mosaic and blue trim tile. Traditional wall sconces and a ceiling pendant accentuate the period look while an historically-inspired sink and toilet re-create a sense of the original turn-of-the-century bath.
