Lewis Kitchen

Oakland, California

dramatic views

An isolated room overlooking a side yard on a magnificent hillside property, this kitchen not only needed modernizing it needed rearranging. The Owner wanted better access to the large back patio and the Architect wanted a relationship to the living room and dining room with bay views.

The solution was to remove all the walls separating these three rooms and squaring off the rear of the house in order to add french doors to the back yard. The ceiling was opened up to the attic, original steel windows were restored and relocated, and new appliances were configured for function as well as the Owner’s informal lifestyle. The kitchen is the focal point of the living room while the dining room is its dramatic finale.

The entire space is illuminated by custom glasswork created by the Owner himself. Glass counters, pendant light fixtures, and feature windows all create an ambiance of light and texture. During the day, the kitchen is bright and airy, in the evening, it is imbued with warm light and reflective surfaces.
